[UPDATE 2]: More information has been released and it is moved to its own article. You can view it here

[UPDATE]: According to an Activision spokesperson, both the FindMakarov website and its matching mailed dog-tags are evidently an elaborate hoax. Kotaku was told by the spokesperson that Activision is “not revealing anything yet” and that anything implying so is nothing but a clever ruse, meaning no reveal Modern Warfare 3 reveal will occur at the GDC next week. We’ll continue to follow the story as it unfolds.

Modern Warfare 3 has been a game surrounded by rumors and mysteries, but it appears that in about 5 days we’ll have some new information regarding its release. Earlier today, That Videogame Blog received bloody dog tags which contained a link to a mysterious website, FindMakarov.com. The site appears to be a countdown for something relating to the next installment in the Modern Warfare series, and features that green, “digitalized” theme associated with the games. More details after the jump.

According to IPlayCOD.com, this is the only link that is contained on the server, and the domain was created 11 days ago. Makarov made it through Modern Warfare 2 without being killed, while Shepherd, his partner-in-crime, wasn’t so lucky. Below is an image of Shepherd’s dog tags, with a clearly visible phrase END THE WAR. We’ll be monitoring the site and let you know what the countdown reveals, so be sure to keep checking back for more news.
