Treyarch and Activision are holding a “Full Multiplayer Reveal” event this evening for the next installment of the critically acclaimed Call of Duty series, Call of Duty: Black Ops, with all signs pointing to a veritable cornucopia of glorious multiplayer information. In addition, as a result of a recent fiasco with Google Ads in which a number of advertisements revealed an apparent start date for the Black Ops multiplayer beta being today, September 1st, you can hopefully expect to be able to sign up for the beta later tonight. We here at GamingViral won’t be present at the event, but we’ll be updating this article throughout the night as more information surfaces. In the meantime, follow this list on Twitter containing a number of gaming media sources present at the reveal, or any other source with live coverage.
So stay tuned for all the news on perks, killstreaks, attachments, and all-around Call of Duty carnage we’ll all be expecting in the year to come!
See all the updates after the break.
[UPDATE - 10:46 EST]:
A presentation at the multiplayer reveal just finished, detailing the 3 major tenets of the multiplayer of Black Ops: “Compete, Customize, and Create.” Treyarch appears to be putting an immense effort into adding an unprecedented amount of customization into Black Ops’s multiplayer, on top of adding innovative new gametypes and modes to Black Ops in an apparent attempt to revolutionize the Call of Duty multiplayer experience:
- A new gametype dubbed “Combat Training”: Players will be able to combat AI-controlled bots either solo or with their friends in a ranking/progression system completely separate from the central online multiplayer
- An in-depth Create-a-Class system: Players will be able to pick and choose from all new perks (some of which alter the appearance of their characters), killstreaks (mortar teams, kill-streak only “power weapons”), and attachments (flamethrower attachments were an announcement of rapturous glory), on top of customizable targeting reticules, camouflage and paint patterns, clan-tag weapon etching, and a surprisingly robust emblem editor
- COD Points: Rather than ranking up with experience points, players will purchase customization options (attachments, etc.) through game-earned currency acquired after each game; “Wager” gametypes allow players to gamble their “COD points” in niche play-modes where the top 3 players earn the pot; “Contracts” can be bought with currency which are essentially time-limited challenges that offer a currency reward
- Theater Mode: Players can save and edit gameplay videos, whether it be for personal highlight reels or to review gameplay strategies, and can tag and search through Xbox Live for easy sharing
- Also, you can apparently get points for diving through glass with the new ability to dive into prone. Deal-sealer.
[Update - 11:47 EST]:
@II_F0XH0UND_II at the event tweeted the perks available in the reveal’s playtesting (obviously, no way to guarantee whether all of these will make it into the final game):
- Tier I Perks: Lightweight, Scavenger, Ghost (a Cold-Blooded replacement), Flak Jacket (reduces explosive damage), Hardline
- Tier II Perks: Hardened (bullet penetration), Scout, Steady Aim, Sleight of Hand, Warlord (apparently a Bling substitute)
- Tier III Perks: Marathon, Ninja, Second Chance, Hacker, Tactical Mask (tear gas and flashbang resistant)
Evidently, One Man Army, Commando, and Danger Close will not be making a return appearance. Joyous shouts heard worldwide!
[Update - 1:13 EST]:
BigPwner.com has released a list of killstreaks available during the event’s playtest. Again, there’s no guarantee that this list will go unchanged by the game’s release.
Killstreaks:
3: Spy-Plane/RC Car
4: Counter Spy-Plane/SAM Turret
5: Care Package/Napalm Strike
6: Sentry Gun/Mortar Team
7: Attack Helicopter/Valkyrie Rockets
8: Blackbird/Rolling Thunder
9: Chopper Gunner
11: Attack Dogs/Gunship
[Update - Jeremy here, just wanted to give you PC gamers a few extra tidbits I picked up from the streams last night]:
Dedicated Servers Confirmed dedicated servers with Black Ops. As of last note, all servers will have to go through Gameservers but the details are still being worked out and the team might be able to open it up to other companies, as well.
Stream is back Much to the dismay of some of the PC gamers, Black Ops will be run through steam using their VAC system to prevent cheating.
Admin Controls Yes, RCON is back with full administrator controls again. This, more than anything, will help prevent cheating.
Theater Mode Definitely included on PC version, too, as well with all of the other things released.
Mods A mod kit and map editing software IS being developed. At last word, it will not be ready at the time of launch, but will be released shortly after.
Ranks are server-side This means that the ranks are stored on separate servers, not on the client’s computer. This will effectively prevent using a third party software to edit your rank.
A trailer has also been released, showing off the new Wager gametypes:
